Former Foreign Minister and PPP stalwart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Monday resigned from party and membership of National Assembly.
He had been at odds with the PPP leadership ever since his re-moval as foreign minister and had been strong critic of the incumbent government. PTI leader Imran Khan said, Qureshi will join his party on 27 November.
According to political observers Zulfqar Mirza’s saga of resignation from Sindh Assembly was an act of inspiration sprouted from Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s valour deed of resignation from office of the Foreign Minister.
Talks have been taking rounds that if Qureshi would join the PTI or any other party. “I am leaving the Zardari league, and: I have quit the membership of the PPP”, Qureshi said, urging other lawmakers to resign from the parliament as the ruling party was losing its popularity in Sindh.“There is no PPP now. It has become a Zardari league. I announce that I will not remain associated with the Zardari league,” he an-nounced. Qureshi said he would announce his next strategy during his visit to Ghotki on November 27. Qureshi said it is always difficult to break old bonds, but some decisions had to be taken. He said that the PPP had a philosophy enchanting the masses to lay down sacrifices for the party.
He recalled the days of the latest return of PPP’s Chairperson Benazir Bhutto from exile, and the party workers enthusiasm.
He said that he had a history of standing up for principle and was the first district nazim to resign. Qureshi recalled that he was the sole nazim who had rejected the of-fers made by former dictator Pervez Musharraf. “Those who were foes of Benazir Bhutto are new friends of President Zardari,” he added. “I was barred from attending a CEC meeting despite having the membership intact,” he commented.
He lashed out at the party’s senior leadership for entering into an alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q). He said Q-league’s alliance is contrary to the Charter of Democracy (COD). “How can we make an alliance with the PML-Q,” he pondered.
Qureshi mentioned of a meeting with President Zardari wherein he advised the president to try new alliances to form PPP government in Punjab, but President Zardari replied that any alliance with “the Qatil League” (reference to PML-Q) was out of the questions as the party workers would not sit well with the decision.
He said that Benazir signed Charter of Democracy with the PML-N, and not the PML-Q so he opposed alliance with the PML-Q for the very reason He criticized Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and said that the government was failed to revive the economy of the country. The former foreign minister also questioned into delay of arrest of accused for Benazir’s murder. He said those who had betrayed Banazir Bhutto were serving as “the right hand” of President Zardari.
The former foreign minister said that Benazir Bhutto’s assassins could not be exposed despite a lapse of four years. He opined that President Zardari had deviated from the vision of Benazir Bhutto to prolong his rule.
President Zardari is ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of power. Mohtarma was a symbol of resistance against dictatorship and unconstitutional rules, he said, adding President Zardari was totally opposite to these principles. “Zardari is following a policy of political perpetuation against the principles of political reconciliation in-troduced by Benazir Bhutto.” He said President Zardari has buried the politics and vision of Benazir Bhutto along with her.
Qureshi said, “those who hurt late Benazir Bhutto now rally around President Zardari. Zardari embraced those who betrayed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed. Opponents of BB are now hands of President Zardari,” Qureshi lamented.
